End of the World or End of an Age: What Will You be Eating?

AMNH --- Maya Stone Calendar

No matter what one believes, a lot has been said about the Mayan calendar and whether it foretells the end of the world, or just the end of an age.  Unfortunately for the Mayans, the end of an age coincided with the conquering of their civilization by the Spaniards.

Nonetheless, my family takes any opportunity to present a themed dinner.  This love of themed dinners is what was the blueprint for my business passportdinners.com, theme-based DIY dinner kits.

So whether it’s to pay tribute to the Mayans, zombies, asteroids, volcanoes, or aliens, there won’t be any canned foods or RMEs on the menu.  Uh, no.

It is cocktail Friday so we’ll go with a Zombie Cocktail:

  • 3 kinds of rum
  • lime juice
  • orange juice
  • pineapple juice

Shake over ice, strain, and top off with a splash of Midori.

For an apocalyptic appetizer decadence rules with Decadently Devilish Truffled Eggs:

  • eggs, boiled
  • mayo
  • Dijon mustard
  • cayenne
  • truffle oil
  • shaved fresh truffle

Bowing to the Aliens, let’s have individual UFO Caprese Salads:

  • fresh mozzarella
  • fresh cherry tomatoes
  • fresh basil
  • oil & balsamic vinegar, mixed with salt & black pepper

For the main course, served with whole wheat spaghetti, it’s Meteor Meatballs:

(This family favorite recipe is taken from Rocco DiSpirito‘s mama, Nicolina.  We’ve adjusted the chicken stock, sweet onion, garlic and parsley puree to chicken stock with finely minced sweet onion, garlic and parsley; we prefer the textures of the minced vegetables/herbs to pureed versions.)

  • chicken stock
  • sweet onion
  • garlic cloves
  • parsley
  • ground beef
  • ground pork
  • ground veal
  • bread crumbs
  • eggs
  • Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
  • red pepper flakes
  • salt
  • olive oil, for frying
  • favorite marinara sauce

Let’s end with a Mayan elite favorite:  Mayan Hot Chocolate:

  • milk
  • cocoa powder
  • brown sugar
  • crushed cloves
  • nutmeg
  • cinnamon stick
  • chili peppers
  • powdered sugar
  • vanilla

So there is our end-of-the-world dinner.  Here’s hearing from you all tomorrow!
